Frederick Douglass is a young, smart, and cunning African American boy. He lives with his grandma where they are held as slaves in Baltimore, Maryland. This story teaches children that reading can open many doors, and that they should pursue their dreams however impossible they may seem.

This is a fictionalized account of young Frederick Douglass' attempts to trick a white child into teaching him how to read.
